Anger mounts at taxis in Douglasdale

FOURWAYS - A video of a taxi driver not obeying the rules of the road has caused an uproar on social media.

A video posted on the ‘I love Fourways’ Facebook group has highlighted the anger felt by residents at taxi drivers in the area who break the rules of the road.

The 1:08-minute video, posted from the account of Shayne Janks Nicolas, was recorded from inside a vehicle and shows a number of motorists, most of them taxis, driving on the wrong side of Leslie Avenue in Fourways in order to avoid the queue of traffic waiting in the left-hand lane.

For the duration of the video, three taxis and one bakkie can be seen driving down the right-hand side of the road, even though Douglasdale Road is a two-way street and such actions are illegal. The video had received 25 comments and 26 likes by 10:30am, three hours after it was posted.

“I used to travel this route and the amount of taxis and others who would drive on the wrong side of road!” said one commenter, Sarah Dawes Wardle.

“I got the finger from a young blond guy in a gold Toyota Tazz once when I confronted him!”

“This [has] been going on for years. Nothing new to residents that have been on that road for years. Problem is that people let them in when they have to push in due to oncoming traffic… if you don’t, they bump your expensive car,” added Marlene Atkinson.

Conversations in the comments section of the post turned to possible solutions. Nico Sagnelli who, according to his profile is a Fourways resident, posted the contact details for Candice James, who was recently elected councillor for Ward 93, and encouraged fellow group members to email her directly about the issue.

“Let’s send hundreds of emails until they do something about it,” he commented.

“The nature of traffic offences is such that an offender must be seen transgressing the law before any action can be taken against them,” Wayne Minnaar, the spokesperson for Metro police explained to Fourways Review.

He did add that residents are invited to inform police about areas or roads where reckless driving is often seen by emailing details to the area commander deputy director Amon Kganyago on amonk@joburg.org.za.
