A royal luxury polo affair

MIDRAND – From teams in the semi-finals competing in the knock-out rounds, to the Minister of Sport and Recreation, Fikile Mbalula awarding the winning team of the day and then followed by a royal evening where a Blue Blazer of excellence award winner was honoured. A royal affair of style and elegance took place on 26 to 28 August at Waterfall Polo Estate.

The Prince of Wales Polo Cup, in association with Royal Salute, saw teams in the semi-finals compete in the knock-out rounds.

The three-day tournament unveiled the grand selection of the South African national polo team and the announcement of the winners of the esteemed Prince of Wales Polo Cup.

Royal Salute is an international supporter of polo, a premium sport which is regarded globally as ‘the king of sport and the sport of kings’.

The semi-finals commenced on 27 August during a family day. In the evening, guests gathered at an exclusive Blue Blazer Gala Dinner held at the Four Seasons Hotel, where the Blue Blazer of excellence award took place.

The winner of this incredible honour was John Eustace, who was recognised for his commitment and excellence in the sport throughout his polo career. He was also part of the team in the semi-finals who competed in knock-out rounds.

Eustace is a five-goal player and has represented South Africa locally and internationally at a junior and senior level. Eustace farms in the Underberg district in KwaZulu-Natal where he runs a large beef, sheep and cropping enterprise. He is married to Jemma and they have three children – Alice, William and Luke.

Eustace’s home club is the Underberg Polo Club where he has been a member from a young age. His roots stem from a strong polo family with both his father and brother-in-law having represented South Africa. Eustace has held just about every administrative position in his club and province. He currently serves on the South African Polo Association executive board as the players’ representative – testimony to his administrative skills and popularity among his peers.
