Fourways Mall fire extinguished

FOURWAYS - A portion of Fourways Mall caught alight on 26 August.

Update – 27 August – 10.20am

Zoe van Onselen, head of marketing for Fourways Mall told Fourway Review that the fire had not affected the malls operations. “We are still open and operating today,” she said.

She said the malls management could confirm that the aircon unit on the concrete rooftop caught fire last night at approximately 9pm. “The fire brigade and emergency services were on site within minutes, there was no damage to the interior building, nor injuries,” Onselen said.

“I can also confirm that there were no injuries to any of our security guards on site,” Onselen said.

Spokesperson for EMER-G-MED Max Cohen said that the Fourways Mall fire has been extinguished.

Update – 26 August – 10.07pm

The fire department and emergency services are still on the scene to contain the flame. Max Cohen from EMER-G-MED said that two security guards at the mall sustained minor smoke inhalation burns and are being assessed on the scene.

He added that the fire started in the air conditioner room and might have spread into Edgars.

“There is a large amount of smoke and the fire fighters are working to contain the blaze.”

Eyewitness, Megan Salvi, told The Fourways Review that she was driving past Fourways Mall when she saw smoke billowing out of the centre.

“I didn’t know what was going on, but saw tons of emergency lights.”

Chairperson of the Douglasdale CPF Jean Berdou said that the Douglasdale CPF neighourhood watch was patrolling and assisting at the scene.

Berdou said no casualties had been reported to the CPF, and  he had received a report from fire station who said that they would remain at the scene for further investigation.

Spokesperson for EMER-G-MED Max Cohen said that they and other emergency services are currently on the scene. He said, ” Its the air conditioner room at the mall. No injuries have been reported and the fire department are on the scene.”
