Weightlifters win again
FOURWAYS – Yard Athletic Weightlifting in Fourways brings home medals from two major competitions.
There was more success for coach Joshua Capazorio as weightlifters from his Yard Athletic Weightlifting team in Fourways competed in two major Gauteng lifting events over the past few weeks.
These events were the Gauteng Bench Press Championships and Gauteng Weightlifting Provincial Championships. This success follows the team’s win in June at the World Powerlifting Championships in Killeen, Texas.
The team’s Master 2 Powerlifter, Craig van Wyk competed in the Gauteng Bench Press Championships at the St Stithians College High Performance Centre. He managed an impressive 190kg bench press, qualifying him for the South African Bench Press Championships later on this year.
At the Gauteng Weightlifting Provincial Championships held at Berario Recreation Centre in Northcliff, Capazorio took 10 weightlifters to the competition. They walked away with five podium places – three gold medals, one silver and one bronze. Celestie Macintosh was awarded champion of champions after she broke the Gauteng snatch record with a 86kg lift, a personal and competition best. She also managed a 100kg clean and jerk.
The medals awarded were as follows:
Gold – Celestie Macintosh – 63kg body weight division
Gold – Gaby De Gouveia – 58kg body weight division
Gold – Kerri Mailer-Carreira – 53kg body weight division
Silver – Allan Knoetze – 77kg body weight division
Bronze – Dylan Van Houten – 77kg body weight division.
