Kids get fit to get smart

FOURWAYS - A new application has been released which helps pupils to keep fit and mentally sharp.

New research is giving pupils more reasons to get fit and keep physically active at a young age.

This can be done by pupils adding JustGym to their daily study regime as it aims to keep the individual not only physically strong but also mentally sharp as well.

JustGym is a brand extension of the Planet Fitness Group.

Planet Fitness has more than 20 years of experience in the health club industry, currently boasting a network of premium health clubs located across the country. “If pupils add cardio to their daily study regime, not only will it rev up their energy or boost their productivity, but it will notch up their memory, problem-solving and thinking capacity as well,” Planet Fitness’ chief executive officer, Manny Rivera said.

“When it comes to exercise, one is working out their brain at the same time as their heart.”

He added that studies have shown that even a 30-minute exercise session circulates extra blood to the brain, delivering the oxygen and nutrients it needs to perform at maximum efficiency, aiding the brain both directly and indirectly. “Exercise affects the brain on multiple fronts and, apart from an increase in blood and oxygen flow, it also aids the body to release a plethora of hormones including serotonin [the well-known mood booster], dopamine which affects attention and learning, and norepinephrine which influences attention, perception and motivation.”

Rivera further added that all of these aid in creating a nourishing environment for the growth of brain cells and with exercise stimulating the brain’s plasticity through the growth of new connections or neurotransmitters, it helps pupils focus, feel better and release tension.

“So before you convince yourself of all the reasons why you should not get fit, especially during exams, think of all the benefits exercising will have on your entire regime as a student and ensure you have fun while you exercise,” he said.

“Whatever motivators or exercise you choose, you should commit to establishing exercise as a habit. We like to think of it as almost like taking prescription medication, as it is well known that exercise is a medicine in its own right, and that should be on the top of everyone’s list of reasons to get fit.”
