Baby safely delivered at the side of the road

FOURWAYS - A baby boy was safely delivered by Emer-G-Med paramedics at the intersection of the R114 and Malibongwe Drive on the late afternoon of 20 June.

Emer-G-Med spokesperson Max Cohen said, “Just after 4.30pm this afternoon EMER-G-MED paramedics were dispatched to reports of a maternity case at “the Lion Park Crossing” – a colloquial name for the intersection of the R114 and Malibongwe Drive in Nietgedacht – north of Johannesburg.”

He said Advanced Life Support Paramedic Jean Briedenhann, arrived on the scene just minutes after the emergency call. He found the soon-to-be mom lying on the side of the road in active labour.

“Our paramedic immediately prepared his equipment to safely deliver the baby, while a passing ambulance (en-route back to Thabazimbi after a long distance inter-hospital transfer) was flagged down by bystanders. The patient was rapidly loaded into the ambulance. Once in the ambulance, Jean quickly and successfully delivered the baby boy,” said Cohen.

Cohen said after the baby boy and his mom were confirmed to both be healthy and in a stable condition, they were transported by provincial ambulance crews to the Dr Yusuf Dadoo Hospital in Krugersdorp for further observations.
