UPDATE: Shootout between burglars and security guards at Fourways Mall

FOURWAYS - A shootout took place at Fourways Mall on the evening of 2 June.

UPDATE: 3 June: 11am – Centre management of Fourways Mall can confirm that both of the Fidelity Security Group guards who sustained minor injuries after a shootout that occurred at the mall on 2 May, have been discharged from hospital.

Zoe van Onselen, marketing manager for Fourways Mall explained that the incident was immediately reported to the control room by mall security.

“The precinct’s response unit of Fidelity Security Group reacted to the call and arrived on the scene approximately two minutes later. The fleeing suspects opened fire on the response unit outside the mall,” she said.

Chris Savva, Managing Director of Accelerate Property Management said, “Shopper safety is our first priority and we are working closely with the South African Police Services, Fidelity Security Group and our tenants to always provide optimum security services,” he concluded.

UPDATE: 2 June 2016: 9:15pm –  Douglasdale Police Station Commander, Brigadier Lettie Hugo, said, “An attempted  burglary took place at a cell phone store at the Fourways Mall at about 8:20pm this evening. The alarm at the premises was triggered and security guards responded swiftly. When the guards arrived at the scene, the burglars brandished their firearms and opened fire at the guards. Two security guards were left injured. One of them was shot in the arm while the other sustained a gun shot wound to the shoulder.”

The suspects are believed to have fled in a silver BMW.

Communications officer of Douglasdale Police, Warrant Officer Balan Muthan says that it appears the burglars forced their way through the doors of the Fourways Mall.

Muthan said, “The burglars forced their way through the doors and made their way to the Telkom store in the mall. They passed a jewellery store en route to Telkom. It appears that none of the stock from the Telkom store is missing, however, the suspects ransacked through the store. The police will be investigating a case of a business robbery.”

Police officers are still at the scene, conducting their investigation.

According to ER24 spokesperson, Chitra Bodasing, the injured are being transported to a hospital for further treatment.

Bodasing said, “Two people were wounded in a shooting incident earlier this evening at a mall in Fourways. ER24 paramedics and other services arrived on scene and found one man lying in the parking lot. Upon assessment of the man believed to be 32 years of age it was found that he was shot in the right shoulder.  Another man, believed to be 50 years of age, was found close by. He was assessed and found to have sustained a graze to the wrist.  The men were treated and transported to hospital for further medical care.”

INITIAL REPORT: 2 June 2016, 9pm – It is believed that a shooting incident took place near the Fourways Mall earlier this evening.

According to ER24 spokesperson, Chitra Bodasing ER24 paramedics have responded to the scene.

According to a tweet by @Crimeairnetwork, one suspect was shot by security officials.
