Dumped rubble causes friction on Cedar Road

FOURWAYS - Rubble dispute sucks in a prominent Fourways construction company and the blame game continues...

Accusations are flying back and forth between a concerned Fourways resident and a construction company over rubble which has been dumped in the neighbourhood.

Andrew Potter of Cedar Road is accusing Neil Vlaming’s construction company, Vlaming (PTY) Ltd, of dumping rubble in the area.

Potter confronted Vlaming over the rubble and demanded the clearing of the stones, gravel and soil, a demand which was ignored.

“I have spoken to the developer, but they are not prepared to take any responsibility for clearing the adjacent site that seems to have been used over the last few years to store building rubble. I spoke to Neil and he denies that any of the rubble on this site is theirs – although I have seen his vehicles clearing their pavement to accommodate boulders, and scraping all excess material onto the open site in question,” said Potter.

Vlaming distanced his company from the rubble. He maintained that the rubble was not theirs, adding that some small construction companies were dumping debris in open spaces to cut costs. He declined to identify the ‘small guys’.

“That rubble is certainly not ours. There is no reason why we would dump rubble next to our site because that would create a bad name for us. We have been in this business for 30 years and we would not tarnish our brand just like that,” said Vlaming. He said the rubble had been lying at the open site for more than three-and-a-half years.

Potter, however, lashed out at Neil and accused him of unethical business conduct. “Neil is obviously speaking from his perspective. The concern here is that other people feel they can now dump rubble on the same site, so where does it stop?” said Potter.

Vlaming shot back, accusing him of clouding his judgement with anger. “I explained to this gentleman that the rubble was not ours, but he could not believe me as he was so angry and fuming,” said Vlaming.

The situation is yet to see a resolution.
