Barney develops young minds

JOBURG – Barney drives the importance of early childhood development through play

The first five years of a child’s life are crucial for the development of their mind and body.

Central to this is the choice of toys and learning aids for children under three years old. This phase of a child’s growth is known as early childhood development (ECD) – and it’s critical in forming the foundation of their aptitude for learning and school.

Recognising the importance of ECD, the world’s most beloved learning sidekick, Barney, has partnered with financial services group Liberty to give away 10 Education Builders.

Each Builder, sponsored by Liberty, will launch an education savings plan for the winner of the competition (details below), with a base investment of R10 000. In addition to the initial prize deposit, the Education Builder allows each lucky winner to make monthly deposits going forward, to save up for the cost of their child’s school fees – and help them follow their dreams.

According to parenting and early childhood specialist, Lynda Smith, toys and games assist hugely with igniting the senses and imagination, and basic developmental concepts such as identifying shapes, colours and numbers.

“The right books, music, puzzles and soft toys all help children better understand the world around them and develop fine motor skills. When children are empowered and encouraged to learn by those closest to them from early on in life, they are more likely to cope better at school,” said Smith.

She added that parents needed to recognise the ways children learn through their senses. She mentioned how soft toys, for instance, help to develop imaginary play. Kids’ TV programmes, such as Barney and Friends, allow children to identify with characters and encourage imagination. These programmes motivate children to play outside, share with others, and encourage daily routine.

“An integral understanding of the importance of ECD brought together Barney, a trusted guide in developing the hearts and minds of toddlers, with Liberty, an equally trusted source of financial advice,” said Chantelle Fritz, marketing manager for Blue Horizon, the exclusive licensing agency of Barney products in South Africa.

Fritz added that each of the lucky winners in the Education Builder competition can rest safe in the knowledge that they’re encouraging learning and growth during ECD, and planning for the future success of their child too.
