Detours dancers celebrate five years

JOBURG - Don't miss out on a festival of movement at Wits.

The Detours festival returns to the Wits Downstairs Theatre stage for its fifth anniversary, and there’s a load on offer.

During the years that the festival has taken place, the Detours festival aimed to discover new avenues in movement composition.

The works that have been produced by various choreographers and performers are exploratory in nature, with the intention of inspiring a new vision of the body in the performing arts. They can range from solo performances to collaborations, as well as ensembles. The nature of the pieces are very moving and often deal with issues that South Africans deal with on a daily basis.

Directors, Joni Barnard and Jane Crewe aim to reflect on past years and promote alternative and experimental approaches to movement composition, physical theatre and choreography.

Not only is the festival intended to inspire the public, but also to educate those who are keen to enter the industry. To enhance the educational aspect of the festival, Detours will also be hosting a series of workshops that are open to students and the public, hosted by international choreographer, Mersiha Mesihovic; as well as workshops by local choreographers, Nomcebisi Moyika and Kwanele Finch Thusi.

The local choreographers will also be showcasing some of their solo pieces at the festival, all while providing assistance to fourth-year university students who seek to find and showcase their own choreographic works.

This is set to be the most thought-provoking festival thus far, geared to unlock the dance aspirations of all those who attend, and one not to be missed.

Detours kicks off at Wits Theatre on 26 May and runs until 29 May.
