‘Drunk thugs’ terrorise visitors at Fourways Life Hospital

FOURWAYS - Claim that 'drunk thugs' terrorise visitors at Fourways Life Hospital, allegedly with no help from security guards.

A Fourways man is still writhing in anger after being subjected to alleged harassment by ‘drunk thugs’ while visiting his mother-in-law at Fourways Life Hospital.

What Kosta Kalarytis expected to be an ordinary hospital visit on a Saturday evening turned horribly wrong when he spent the night fending off what he described as ‘drunken, drug-fuelled thugs on hospital premises’.

“On Saturday evening, 14 May at around 8pm, my wife and I, together with my one-year-old child, had the misfortune of visiting Fourways Life Hospital and spent the night fending off a drunken, drug-fuelled thug on their premises,” said Kalarytis.

“After we had visited my mother-in-law who was recovering from a knee operation, I found it quite unusual that a vehicle was parked right in front of the emergency drop-off entrance with windows wide open and music blaring. The occupants of that vehicle were also clearly heavily intoxicated and probably on drugs and were generally being rude to patients and visitors who happened to be walking by.”

He added that the troublesome lot took off from the hospital at high speed before spinning their wheels in the car park, much to the displeasure of patients and visitors.

“At the same time, an elderly man who was walking with a friend in the car park took it upon himself to berate the driver who was causing all this commotion. The drunk driver, in turn, jumped out of his vehicle and started swearing and threatening the elderly gentleman,” said Kalarytis.

He added that the hospital security guards failed to help when they were alerted to the commotion by his wife. Kalarytis also accused the security guards of leaving him at the mercy of the drunk men who publicly threatened him for protesting against their conduct.

“It’s disgusting and scandalous that Fourways Life Hospital offers barely any security on their premises and are very slow to respond to an emergency situation that might endanger their patients’ and visitors’ lives,” he added.

Fourways Life Hospital spokeswoman, Jane Lamprey declined to respond to a set of questions e-mailed to her by this newspaper. Lamprey said her group communication team will attend to the query. However, no response had been received by the time of publication.
