Golf day raises R1m for charity

STEYN CITY - Radio personality, Thabo Molefe, also known as TboTouch, hosts inaugural Touch Invitational Golf Day at Steyn City to raise funds for Diepsloot children.

A charity initiative which aims to inspire and motivate primary school pupils in Diepsloot, Delivering Happiness to Diepsloot, was backed by Steyn City’s brand ambassador and radio personality, Thabo Molefe, also known as TboTouch.

Molefe voiced his determination to see the project achieve an even greater impact this year, and he did so by inviting a number of high profile South African celebrities and influential businessmen to tee off at Steyn City’s 18-hole Jack Nicklaus-designed golf course on 9 May. The proceeds from the golf day’s evening auction went towards the charity initiative.

Molefe hosted his inaugural Touch Invitational Golf Day at Steyn City which was a vibrant, passionate, but strictly exclusive, premium golfing experience for like-minded, industry game-changers.

“This is the fifth year that Steyn City will drive their annual charity initiative which aims to inspire and motivate pupils in Diepsloot. Every year at Christmas we give the children schoolbags brimming with sweets, stationery and toys,” said Molefe.

The initiative has managed to gather momentum every year and last year it reached more than 9 000 pupils. Sponsors such as Auto & General, Kelloggs, Croxley and 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day made the campaign a success, and the giveaway of repurposed schoolbags was a major highlight.

Molefe was excited about the opportunity to boost the project and said, “We are focused on our goal of making this year’s charity drive bigger than ever. It is not only about reaching more pupils, although that is obviously a big part of our objective, but we are also excited about bringing them new products,” the radio star expressed.

His main aim is to include school shoes in the year-end package.

“Education has been identified as the key to helping our country overcome obstacles to development,” said Molefe.

The winner of the inaugural round, the individual Stableford highest net result, was Minister of Sports and Recreation, Fikile Mbalula.

With incredible items up for auction, such as ringside tickets to Floyd Money Mayweather’s 50th fight in September, certified autographed photographs of Tiger Woods and Nelson Mandela, a two-night stay at the Zulu Camp at the Shambala Private Game Reserve and six months’ unlimited access to Steyn City Golf Club. The guests were more than generous in their bidding and the auction, together with individual pledges, raised a whopping R1 100 000.

“The day was a great deal of fun as this was for a good cause. Next year will be bigger and better!”
