2 000 public loos planned for Joburg’s taxi ranks and informal settlements

FOURWAYS – Johannesburg Property Company to roll out toilets project at taxi ranks.

Crowded taxi ranks and informal settlements in the Fourways area stand to benefit from the 2 000 public toilets project which the Johannesburg Property Company (JPC) will be rolling out soon.

The announcement was made in Parktown on 12 April by the JPC CEO, Helen Botes who made the announcement during the 50th Anniversary Convention of the South African Property Owners Association (Sapoa)

Without mentioning Diepsloot by name, Botes said all informal settlements in Johannesburg that lag behind in terms of toilet

facilities will benefit. “The idea is to give the public decent toilets in areas where such facilities are not adequate. There is already a budget allocation for that, but what we cannot provide for now is a map of where these toilets will be built,” said Botes.

Speaking at the same occasion, she invited members of the public to express their views during the Sapoa Convention on how the limited land in Johannesburg could be put to optimum use.

“The JPC has always worked with Sapoa and been a regular partner of Sapoa at the conventions, however, this year, we have a message that we’d like to particularly discuss in the form of how council utilises land for economic development and social development to achieve transformation objectives,” said Botes.

The City of Johannesburg owns around 30 000 parcels of land covering 77 809 hectares, [with a] municipal value of R8.7 billion and a market value of over R35 billion.”

She also invited property stakeholders and communities to partner with the council to ensure growth, maintenance, protection, restoration and development of council properties on both vacant and improved properties to achieve economic, social, and financial objectives.
