Update on the recovery of beloved equestrian member

KYALAMI - An admired and loved member of the equestrian community in Kyalami, Agnes Phiri, was recently injured in a hit and run, and close family friend Natalie Hogg expressed her gratitude for the community's support during Phiri's recovery.

Agnes Phiri, an admired and loved member of the equestrian community in Kyalami, was recently injured in a hit-and-run incident, and close family friend Natalie Hogg talks about her recovery thus far.

According to Hogg, Phiri has recently had the stitches on her face taken out and plastic surgeons are yet to check her arm to determine whether they should operate on it or not.

Hogg added that Phiri lost her teeth during the incident and they are not sure how much her teeth will cost. “Phiri was violently hit by a car in a hit-and-run accident while waiting for a taxi near Fourways Mall. She was left in a critical condition with her face severely disfigured and her right arm also severely broken. Thankfully the trauma unit at the Johannesburg General Hospital has done an incredible job of rebuilding her face,” Hogg said.

“I appreciate the support from the community and how amazing they have been during this time for Phiri. People have supplied us with creams and oils for Phiri’s face and skin.”

Hogg further said that Phiri has started using products that help reduce the scarring on her body and will be scheduled to undergo laser treatment once she is out of hospital.

“She will also need physiotherapy for her arm so that she can get back to the wonderful person that we know and love,” Hogg expressed.

Phiri was a young teenager when she went to live with the Hogg family. Within a few weeks of being there, she showed an interest in riding and, not needing any encouragement Hogg, saw her mounted and riding every day with the other children at Phaeton Park Stables. Phiri proved to be a natural and talented horse rider, which opened up a new world for her. With sponsorships, she was able to compete in a South African team event in Swaziland and won 1.1m classes.

Furthering her love for horses, Phiri joined the GHS staff and is currently employed at Equestrian House, proving how super-efficient and organised she is.
