Ward 96 final voter registration runs smoothly

FOURWAYS – Residents go and update their physical address details at the final voter registration held on 9 and 10 April.

The final voter registration weekend for the 2016 municipal elections took place on 9 and 10 April.

Ward 96 councillor Matome Mafokwane said many registered voters in his ward had to update their address as it was either not captured, incorrect or had changed.

Masego Sheburi, Gauteng provincial electoral officer, explained that although the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) currently had about 25 million people registered on their voters’ roll, eight million people didn’t have an address and up to 55 percent didn’t have a proper or correct address captured on the IEC database.

Sheburi confirmed that the IEC would be working on capturing all updated addresses before the municipal elections which are scheduled to take place in August.

Mafokwane urged residents to update their address details as it could affect where they could register and vote. “Residents who are unsure if they are registered to vote in the 2016 Municipal Elections or where their voting district is, can visit the IEC elections site, or download the election app for Android or iOS to check their registration status,” he said.

Registration can be done from 8am to 5pm Monday to Friday at the local electoral commission office.

Mafokwane confirmed that more than 100 people in his ward had come through this past weekend to register.
