Lonehill group hopes to get residents’ reactions to telecommunication towers

LONEHILL – Telecommunication tower debate continues

A committee on a mission to elicit the residents’ direct responses to the installation of telecommunication towers has emerged in Lonehill.

The Lonehill Standards Committee (LSC) is the residents volunteer arm of the Joint Standards Working Committee  (JSWG) which comprises, Lonehill resident volunteers and MTN.

The LSC and JSWG, are chaired by Philip Broenland who said LSC’s intention is to communicate openly and to encourage honest feedback from the community. The group has created an online survey initiative to independently gauge the residents’ feelings about the towers.

LSC is urging property owners and residents of Lonehill to complete a survey which can be accessed on www.lonehillres.co.za/survey.

“It was agreed that Lonehill residents representing the community would work with MTN and the Lonehill Residents’ Association (LRA) to come up with a connectivity solution for the suburb which is suitable to all Lonehill residents, not just LRA members,” Broenland said.

A LSC member, Toni Subbes said this followed after City Power and MTN, backed by the LRA with ward councillors’ support, executed a well-planned operation in the last half of last year and converted 13 City Power street poles into 4G towers with accompanying electrical boxes – without residents being informed about it.

LSC said the residents were concerned with the unethical installation of the 4G towers and expressed their reservations.

  •  4G towers’ proximity to schools and residential properties
  •  Property devaluation
  •  Health issues linked to electromagnetic radiation
  •  Safety and security due to the size and placement of the 4G towers with their accompanying electrical boxes
  •  The aesthetic impact on the environment.
