Councillor Mafokwane in a bid to break K46 impasse

DIEPSLOOT - Councillor Matome Mafokwane wants to end the conflict surrounding the building of the K46.

Ward 96 councillor, Matome Mafokwane has lamented the chasing away of Lubbe Contraction workers from the K46 site by the disgruntled local business community.

The K46 road project was brought to a standstill last week following disagreements between the main constructor and local community members. The leadership of both Business Forum and Great Diepsloot Business Forum are accusing the main contractor of ducking and diving with the 40 percent stake of the R500 million tender meant to benefit the local people and businesses.

Mafokwane’s ward falls in the area which stands to benefit from the massive road upgrades. The councillor revealed to Fourways Review on 5 April that he was in the process of calling an urgent meeting with all stakeholders to address the issue.

“I have called for an urgent meeting with all stakeholders to resolve the impasse. Once all parties agree to a meeting, we shall take it from there,” said Mafokwane.

He added that it was sad that all work had stopped, maintaining that a solution was needed as soon as possible.

“The confusion is around a 40 percent stake to the locals, not only promised by the MEC but scripted in the BOQ [Bill Of Quantity] and Lubbe,” said Mafokwane.

The management of Lubbe Contraction has not yet responded to questions sent to them by the time of going to press.
