Friends of Free Wildlife rescue two Egyptian geese at Emmerentia Dam

EMMERENTIA – THE Friends of Free Wildlife (FFW) team, who are based in Fourways, rescued injured Egyptian geese at Emmerentia Dam on 25 March.

“Many of these geese have fishing line tangled around their legs, causing horrific injuries. This is one of the many dangers that our urban wildlife faces in their fight for survival,” chairperson of FFW, Margi Brocklehurst said.

Brocklehurst extended her gratitude to the team of volunteers who willingly gave up their time to assist with the difficult and frustrating rescue. “Identifying the injured geese amongst the huge flock was not easy, coaxing them onto dry land was time-consuming and just as we thought we had cornered the injured ones, they would make a dash for the safety of the dam and the whole process would have to start all over again,” Brocklehurst expressed.

Eventually two geese were rescued and taken to the Fourways Veterinary Hospital for treatment.

“Thank you to the FFW volunteers and the Fourways Veterinary Hospital for their care and compassion. If only people would be more thoughtful and pick up and dispose of their discarded fishing tackle, these unfortunate injuries would be easily avoidable,” Brocklehurst said.
