Riversands Incubation Hub hosts event to empower pupils

RIVERSANDS – Riversands Incubation Hub held an event called #BeTheBossOfYourFuture to help Grade 11 and 12 pupils from Sunrise Secondary School and Diepsloot West Secondary School unlock career opportunities on 11 March.

About 380 pupils attended the truly life-changing event as questions were asked throughout the day.

According to Nicola Neal from Riversands Incubation Hub, the event was about giving the pupils an opportunity to explore and understand how to access opportunities after matric.

On the day, a panel of experts freely gave of their time and shared with pupils critical and practical tools to empower them to take control of their future.

The panel touched on topics such as:

  •  Being responsible – understanding that actions have consequences
  •  Being passionate about what you do
  •  Personal branding
  •  Dress code in the workplace
  •  Using social media wisely
  •  Accessing learnership opportunities.

The managing director of Consultant Powerhouse, Vanessa Bluen, spoke about personal branding, telling pupils that their personal brand is what they stand for. “If you’re not certain what your personal brand is, someone else will define it for you. Your brand is not just about you, it’s also how you make other people feel, how you respond and respect other people,” she said.

Bluen works with individuals in organisations at all levels to challenge their work and personal paradigms, build critical skills and play to their strengths. She added, “To make success possible, young people from underprivileged communities must be given skills, access to the right opportunities and a sense of confidence so they can see that anything is possible.”

After the event from Grade 11 pupil from Diepsloot West Secondary, Nomsa Mabaso commented, “This gave me valuable information on building my future and focusing on school work. I was inspired to dream, be passionate and to believe in myself more.”

Executive coach at Optimal Change and facilitator for the day, Kedibone Mooi, shared her life story, describing how she achieved success despite the odds. Mooi stressed that this is the beginning of their success journey. ”It is your choice,” Mooi said.

“Think about the impact of your actions, it is all in your hands. Apply your mind and take responsibility for your actions.”

Pupils who participated during the session were given prizes to help enrich themselves. The Hub also gave each pupil a pack with a CV template, an action plan as well as a copy of the presentation by the panel of experts.
