FreeMe opens doors to interns

PAULSHOF- FreeMe animal rehabilitation centre has taken in 11 interns as part of an agreement with EOH Holdings, an organisation that gives underprivileged pupils training in computer skills.

Although the centre is not taking in animals for rehabilitation due to its temporary closure on 10 November last year, they are conducting IT training for interns as per the arrangement.

The centre was closed by the Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural Development and the National Council of SPCAs (NSPCA) due to the reapplication of the centre’s permit to operate.

“FreeMe is one of the companies that take in interns as part of an agreement with EOH and we give these interns the opportunity to further their IT and computer related skills at the centre,” FreeMe’s rehabilitation and nutrition specialist, Karien Schmidt said.

Schmidt said the interns would begin a three-week orientation programme which would include fundraising, marketing, administration, finance and stock processing among others.

“The interns are learning how to capture data and how to work computers. After the three weeks of the orientation the interns will be allocated to specific areas in the centre for which they are better suited,” Schmidt said.

She added that further training would be provided for the interns for their 10-month internship at the centre.

“Only interns that show interest and capabilities to work with animals will be given the opportunity to assist staff members and management with the animals that are going to be in need of rehabilitation in future,” Schmidt said.
