Ladies excel in river race

FOURWAYS - Fourways resident, Sonja Bohnsack, and her racing partner, Merrill King, won the ladies race at the Two Day Klip River Challenge on 30 to 31 January, which was held in preparation for the FNB Dusi Canoe Endurance River Race.

Despite the rough and turbulent waters, numerous obstacles and long distance, Bohnsack and her partner enjoyed a successful race. The pair won first place for the K2 ladies finishers with a time of 06:55:00.

The Two Day Klip River Challenge was the last river race in Gauteng prior to the FNB Dusi and was an essential training opportunity for the paddlers as it provided demanding technical stretches with numerous obstacles for paddlers to climb in and out of.

A number of paddlers from Mpumalanga, KwaZulu-Natal and Cape Town participated in the race, as their own rivers have been dry due to drought conditions.

“Kia/Hyundai Fourways not only provided a bus for transport for the paddlers to the start of the race after leaving their cars at the finish line, but they also assisted with marshalling and directional advice for the paddlers and runners through sections where the river was too dangerous due to fallen trees after recent storms and flooding,” Gauteng Canoe Union’s Jennie Dallas said.
