Kya Sands fire victims receive help

Kya Sands - Thousands of families who lost their homes in Kya Sands after a fire swept through their informal settlement in December, received a donation from Fourways’ Five Roads Security Association.

The association staged a fundraising campaign and raised R5 000, and chairman of the association, Minoj Bhoola, handed over the cheque to Judah Africa, a non-profit organisation based in Bloubosrand which runs a food and water kitchen in the area, on 29 January.

“With the outbreak of the fires within the Kya Sands informal settlement in December and the need that subsequently arose, the Fourways Five Roads Security Association and the community decided to get involved and help where they could,” said Bhoola.

In addition to the R5 000, Fourways resident, Ilana Erasmus, who was touched by the victims’ situation, turned her house into a drop-off point for food, clothes and toiletries which were dispatched last year.

“The work being done by this little-known non-profit organisation [Judah Africa] is amazing. Their community kitchen provides in excess of 6 000 meals a month. They have filled a need in the community for primary schooling [some children as old as 12, have never attended school in their lives],” said Bhoola.

Bhoola said 60 children were involved in soccer through Judah Africa, which also established a thrift shop in the impoverished Kya Sands area. This shop implements a number of upliftment and education initiatives in the area, including running nurseries and a brick manufacturing plant.

“Of course, let’s not forget their disaster management, which assists with disasters such as shack fires – all too common in the winter months – and xenophobic attacks,” concluded Bhoola.
