The Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority celebrates second anniversary

DAINFERN – International service organisation, Alpha Kappa Alpha (AKA) Sorority celebrated its second anniversary of service to South Africa.

In celebration of their anniversary, members of the sorority came together to help rape survivors by collecting handbags, each packed with a variety of feminine products, which they plan to donate to the Jes Foord Foundation, a non-profit organisation supporting rape survivors.

The bags will be delivered to various rape survivor centres in the country.

Since setting up in SA, the sorority continues to promote leadership and involvement in the global community, following its motto ‘Service to all mankind through Scholarship, Sisterhood and Service’.

Tracy Whitfield, a member of the sorority, explained that the organisation had been involved in a number of projects impacting a number of schools and nursery schools in Diepsloot, Soweto, and other parts of the country.

Some of the sorority’s initiatives include providing leadership development for girls and boys in grades 9 to 12, encouraging personal fitness and healthy lifestyles, preserving the environment and empowering women, building wealth and allocating resources, addressing gender equality issues and training leaders at all levels within the organisation.

“In a world in which materialism is pervasive, where technology and competition have decreased the need for collaboration and co-operation, it is critical to cut across racial, international, physical and social boundaries to help communities develop constructive relationships with others,” said Whitfield. “AKA is an organisation which does just that.”

Notable members of the sorority from the continent include President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, President of Liberia and Nobel Peace Prize recipient; Madam Leah Tutu, humanitarian and wife of Archbishop Desmond Tutu; and Sheila Sisulu, South African Ambassador to the United States, to name a few.
