Help us find our child – a family’s desperate plea

DOUGLASDALE – Family members of 15-year-old Amahle Khanyile are pleading with anyone for information about her whereabouts to come forward.

Amahle was last seen singing and dancing at her home near the Lion Park informal settlement on 26 September. She then had a bath and went to the shop but never returned.

According to the teenager’s mother, Lunga Khanyile, Amahle has been spotted in Diepsloot, Cosmo City and Lion Park townships by community members, however, every time the family goes looking for her, she is nowhere to be found, making her believe that Amahle’s friends are covering up for her and warning her.

Lunga’s employer, Joan Thompson said, “I have seen and experienced the fear and worry that reaches a point where the parent simply cannot function any longer. Lunga gets through the day in a disbelieving and concerned daze and cannot sleep at night.”

Despite opening a case with the Douglasdale police, Thompson added that it had been difficult to get assistance from police and other authorities.

“We have been sent from pillar to post by the police and welfare workers who nonchalantly say the same thing – ‘third one today, nothing we can do to help you’,” Thompson said.

Lunga said, “You reach a point where you become frustrated and this turns into anger. For self-preservation, you have to start convincing yourself that your daughter has chosen to run away and will continue to hide from you being protected by friends who do not realise the pain they are helping to cause.

“You convince yourself she will return when she is ready. You pray non-stop for her safety, and the fear of the unknown destiny of your child keeps surfacing and your inner conflict starts all over again as you cry out, ‘why’?”
