Douglasdale Retirement Village have fun in the sun

DOUGLASDALE – Douglasdale Retirement Village recently held its annual Family Fun Day and Garden Extravaganza on 10 October.

Gerrie Snyman, one of the directors of the village, said the main focus of the garden extravaganza, among others, was to encourage people to beautify their own gardens within the village. “Every cent that was raised will be used to enhance and maintain the common areas within the village,” he said.

Snyman said the village also held an annual garden competition on the day that aligned with the main objective of the event. Fay Reeves, a resident of the village, won this year’s garden of the year competition out of 221 competing gardens and took the crown from previous year’s winners, Graham and Joan Felton. They, however, won the award for the best common garden area.

Lesley George, another resident of the village, won the small garden category award and Susan Laubscher received the award for the best balcony garden.

Snyman explained that the gardens were judged based on the theme ‘beauty is in the eye of the beholder’.

Now in its third year, the event catered for young and old and had an array of stalls ranging from food and art to gardening.
