Beaulieu Preparatory School boys impress at South African Schools Judo Championships

MIDRAND - Beaulieu Preparatory School boys won gold at the South African Schools Judo Championships, held on 3 and 4 October in Turffontein.

 

Combined, the pupils bagged four gold medals comprising two in the advanced group and two in the novice group. They also took home two silver medals in the advanced group.

Matt Morkel won a gold medal for U9 boys under 34kg and Alex Hristov won gold for the same age group for boys under 38kg. Flynn Carroll won gold in the novice group for boys Group 3 for U13/14 boys under 42kg, while Oliver Fieldhouse took gold for U7 boys under 21kg in the same group.

The McCabe brothers, Connor and Ethan, won silver medals in their respective categories, which included advanced boys U11 under 42kg and advanced boys U9 under 42kg.

All the boys were coached by Sensei Basil Smith from Tatami Judo Club who said, “The boys worked hard and got pleasant results. Their tenacity, spirit, commitment and dedication to the sport are an inspiration to us all.”

Headmistress at Beaulieu Preparatory, Noele Hillen said, “We are extremely proud of our Judo boys and would like to congratulate each of them on their excellent achievements at the South African Schools Judo Championships. Well done boys!”

Other pupils who took part in the competition, and were equally recognised for their performances, included Douglas Jennett and Travis Mace. Both boys competed in the novice group and excelled. Hillen said, “It is an achievement in itself just to be selected by the province to take part in a prestigious national tournament like this.”
