CPF chairperson’s take on this year’s crime statistics

DOUGLASDALE - Douglasdale Community Policing Forum (CPF) chairperson, Jean Berdou, recently commented on this year's crime statistics which were released on 29 September by the South African Police Services.

According to Berdou, contact crimes, which are crimes involving physical harm to persons, increased nationally and more resources were needed to improve policing.

He said, “The one shining light in the apparent relative gloom of upward trends in crime, nationally, has been a decrease in many categories of crime in the Douglasdale Police Precinct.”

The chairperson stated that some of the specific crime decreases in the area included attempted murder, which is fractionally down by 30 percent; common robbery, which is down by 5 percent; residential burglary, which is down by 10 percent; commercial crime, which is down by 10 percent; and carjacking, which is down by 28 percent.

Berdou stated there were, however, certain categories that showed an increase, with the leader being theft out of motor vehicles with nearly

1 000 cases reported.

“I urge the community to check that their vehicles are locked before leaving them to prevent remote jamming, and to not leave

valuables in motor vehicles,” Berdou added.

He attributed the drop in contact crime to the immense dedication and hard work of the Douglasdale police management and staff, the outstanding commitment and dedication of the Douglasdale CPF teams and volunteers, including Neighborhood Watch groups, and the excellent co-operation from the community.

“There have been a number of massive challenges we’ve had to deal with, but I’m incredibly proud of my CPF team, which has risen to the challenge and contributed immensely in ways many we will never know about to make our community safer for all – and we aren’t done yet,” Berdou concluded.
