Ward 93 councillor Annette Deppe supports Luresha Govender’s family in court

PAULSHOF – The murder trial of Anthony Strauss, the 39-year-old handyman accused of strangling Luresha Govender to death in her Paulshof residence in December last year after an argument about payment, has been postponed to 8 October.

Strauss briefly appeared in the Randburg Magistrates’ Court on 28 September and admitted to strangling Govender after extensive drug use. He is expected to return to court on 8 October for final sentencing.

Speaking in support of the Govender family, Ward 93 councillor Annette Deppe said, “Our hearts go out to the entire Govender family at this terrible time, especially to Govender’s mother Rani, father Nad and brothers Nuren and Navan.

“We cannot imagine the pain they are feeling, firstly for the loss of their beloved daughter and sister, and secondly, at having to relive the dreadful day in court.”

Deppe added that senseless acts of violence could easily be reduced if the root cause was eradicated. “Drugs are one of society’s greatest ills, and drug use needs to be eradicated sooner rather than later,” she said.

“Until we comprehensively address the issue of drugs in society and break the stronghold they have on communities, senseless acts of violence such as this will sadly continue to occur,” she concluded.

The Democratic Alliance extended its deepest condolences to the Govender family for their terrible loss.
