DA Gauteng Shadow MEC for Community Safety comments on alleged Douglasdale police brutality video

DOUGLASDALE - On the day when eight policemen were found guilty of Emidio Macia's murder, another video of police brutality emerged, this time of Douglasdale policemen allegedly assaulting two victims.

“The behaviour on the part of the police is unacceptable, and the officers in question must be arrested, charged and suspended immediately,” said Kate Lorimer DA Gauteng Shadow MEC for Community Safety, commenting on the video.

According to Lorimer, anything less would send a message to the community that the police do not take matters of this nature seriously.

“This brutality follows a number of similar videos and accounts of police brutality around the Edenvale policing area,” Lorimer alleged.

She added that National Police Commissioner, Riah Phiyega and Provincial Police commissioners needed to take a much stronger stance on the issue and make it clear to all police members that such brutal actions would not be tolerated.

“Every time an incident of this nature is exposed, the credibility of the police suffers and the relationship between the police and the community is broken,” Lorimer expressed.

“If we cannot trust the people who are supposed to protect us, who can we trust?”

Warrant Officer, Balan Muthan of Douglasdale Police Station said, “The Saps and Douglasdale police are looking at the incident in a very serious light, and the docket has now been sent to the Independent Complaints Directorate and the investigation will continue.”
