Speed limit change causes friction in Kyalami

KYALAMI - The Johannesburg Metro Police Department are heading for a showdown with residents of Kyalami over a speed limit change along Main Road between the R55 and Maple Road.

Fuming motorists claim that the Metro police ambushed them by dropping the speed limit on Main Road from 80km/h to 60km/h before issuing any public notice.

“It has come to our attention that the speed limit on Main Road [From Maple Road to the R55 Kyalami Road] has been changed from 80km/h to 60km/h,” said motorist Cathi Collins in a written complaint to Fourways Review. She said she hasn’t seen any public announcement to that effect in any newspaper, including Fourways Review.

Collins added that motorists were now falling prey to traffic cops who were forever setting roadblocks on their busy stretch of Main Road.

“It’s a popular stretch for Metro police to set up cameras or roadblocks on a regular basis. Once past Maple [Road] heading towards Lonehill, when the road becomes a single lane the speed limit changes back to 80km/h,” fumed Collins. She feels that the change does not make sense and is only used as a speed trapping facility.

The Johannesburg Roads Agency was to still to provide clarity on the query by the time of publication. Questions e-mailed to the agency spokesperson Bertha Peters-Scheepers had not been responded to by the time of publication.
