Proposed taxi rank in Fourways generates friction

FOURWAYS - A showdown is looming between Fourways residents and the City of Johannesburg over the proposed construction of a taxi rank on the corner of Roos Street and Fourways Boulevard.

A resident of Aquila Street, Gareth Utton, is inviting fellow Fourways residents to make a stand against the council about the proposed construction in their neighbourhood.

Utton said the taxi rank will have a negative effect on property values, and urged residents to resist the construction.

“We, as owners in Aquila [Street], have been living here for the past six years and we strongly feel that building a taxi rank in a residential area such as this will be… [to our] detriment, not only to us in Aquila [Street] but also to the surrounding businesses and complexes. I, myself, recognise the need for a taxi rank and transport, but strongly feel that this is not the ideal space to be doing it,” said Utton in a written statement to Fourways Review.

Utton said taxi ranks have a history of bringing all sorts of negativity into an area. He urged residents to note their displeasure over the proposal through their local newspaper, Fourways Review.

“We urge you, as residents within the area, to please place a notice in the Fourways Review so we can make all Fourways residents aware of this matter and all have our say,” pleaded Utton.

Joburg Roads Agency spokesperson Bertha Peters-Scheepers distanced the agency from the proposed taxi rank. City of Johannesburg spokesperson, Virgil James, did not respond to inquiries e-mailed to him on 28 July.
