The people’s car turns 80

FOURWAYS – It is said Volkswagen Beetles are never chosen by an owner, but a Beetle will always know which owner is right for them.

Once a Beetle has chosen a driver, the driver is inclined to name the vehicle – anything from Betsy to Daisy or even Battle-axe. The driver will also begin to feel compelled to take the utmost pride in the maintenance, aesthetics and general upkeep of the Beetle.

These were the kind of people who flocked to Idle Winds entertainment venue on 20 June to show off their classic Volkswagens and celebrate the 80th anniversary of the Beetle on World Beetle Day.

The venue was filled with Beetles of all shapes and colours and in sizes of every range – but it wasn’t only the Beetles that were a feast for the eyes. Karmann Ghias gleamed in the sun, while old-school Kombis, kitted out with everything an adventurous traveller would ever need, were on display.

Classic Vespas with side cars, racing cars, beach buggies, and of course, Volkswagen’s more affluent cousin, Porsche, were also exhibited while event-goers enjoyed some fun in the winter sun at the beer garden with live entertainment.

The certificate for the most classic car at the event went to Werner Alker for his 1943 Küpelwagen, the oldest form of the Beetle at the event. The Küpelwagen was designed by Ferdinand Porsche in 1938 to act as an inexpensive, lightweight military transport vehicle that could be operated reliably both on- and off-road, in even the most extreme conditions.

When it comes to Beetles, the rest, as they say, is history.
