Keep your child safe with these tips

JOBURG - With mid-year school holidays around the corner, working parents are faced with a stressful period of worrying about their child's safety.

Theunis Kotze, general manager for ADT Inland Region, has some safety tips that may be worth considering:

  •   It is important that children know to always keep entry and exit doors locked, and that nobody is to enter the property without your permission
  •  If you have a home security system installed, teach your children how to activate and deactivate it and how and when to use other security devices such as panic buttons
  •  Keep a list of emergency contacts – including the 10 111 number – near the telephone and explain to your children what the list is for and how to use it
  •   Teach your children to be safe online; explain to them that they should never post any personal information on the internet, to think carefully before posting pictures or videos of themselves, to keep their privacy settings as high as possible, to never give out passwords, not to befriend or meet up with anybody who they meet online and that not everybody on the internet is who they say they are, and to immediately tell you if they feel uncomfortable about anything online
  •  Warn your children to be cautious of shopping malls, as pickpockets often target malls during the holiday seasons when foot traffic picks up significantly.
