Prompt police response yields hijacked vehicle in Diepsloot

DIEPSLOOT – A MAN was arrested in Diepsloot on 28 May for suspicion of hijacking after he was spotted driving a stolen Toyota Quantum minibus.

Warrant officer Daniel Mavimbela of Diepsloot Police Station said the hijacking occurred on the N14 highway. He said the minibus was travelling towards Pretoria when it was bumped from the rear by a blue Toyota Camry.

“Soon after the victim had stopped to engage the Camry driver, another white Toyota Quantum reportedly stopped in front of the victim’s minibus,” said Mavimbela.

“A group of about seven men alighted from the Quantum, one carrying a firearm. They forced him into his minibus and drove away, but he was dropped off a short while later.”

After the local police tracing unit learnt of the hijacking through a tip-off, their reaction was so prompt that by the time the victim arrived at the police station to report the matter, the suspect had already been apprehended.

“When the victim arrived to report the hijacking, he found his… [vehicle] parked at the police station,” added Mavimbela.

“He further identified the 28-year-old suspect who he saw in the client service centre as one of the men who had allegedly earlier hijacked his minibus on the N14.”

The suspect will be charged with hijacking and the police are searching for the remaining suspects.

“The police warn motorists to make a careful observation and assessment of their surroundings when involved in some of these freak accidents,” Mavimbela concluded.

“When in doubt, motorists should rather stop at a safe location or drive to the nearest police station to report the matter.”
