Save a life on World Malaria Day

JOBURG - Believe it or not, malaria still affects a whopping 50 percent of the world today, even though it is treatable and preventable.

With 25 April being World Malaria Day, Goodbye Malaria is using creativity to solve one of Africa’s biggest problems.

Put together by African entrepreneurs, Goodbye Malaria is a great initiative that, since October 2013, has protected more than 120 000 people in Mozambique’s Boane province alone, by spraying over 35 000 homes with a residual insecticide and reducing malaria in the area by at least 67 percent.

The initiative has the people, power and support to really make a difference. And so does the public… all it takes is a visit to the group’s new website and online shop – www.goodbyemalaria.com. The online store sells Shwe Shwe Lounge Pants, Mashozi Bears and bracelets proudly made by Africans. For every item sold, the proceeds go directly to fund Goodbye Malaria’s elimination spray programme. The Shwe Shwe pants are quite popular, with many of the ambassadors sporting a pair. They come in five afrocentric colours and are sold for R350 each. Robert Brozin, founder of Goodbye Malaria and Nando’s said, “They’re the perfect gift and can be purchased online.” They will also be available this weekend at the launch of the Ingénuité store in Montecasino.

On 22 April, a Goodbye Malaria brand ambassador, MiCasa’s J’Something, raced against the Gogos from Noluthando 1 Senior Citizens Club at the Beading for Malaria Challenge. In just 24 minutes (representing 24 hours in the daily fight against malaria,), an incredible total of 899 bracelets were beaded. These bracelets will be sold to fund the spraying of a further 1 797 homes, essentially saving more lives.

Today, Goodbye Malaria released an inspiring video of brand ambassador Kingsley Holgate, a man who has suffered from malaria 50 times. Even the well-known Princess of Africa, Yvonne Chaka Chaka is a malaria warrior who is committed to the Goodbye Malaria programme.
