Starving dogs found on Lanseria property

LANSERIA - Bryanston-based animal rescue organisation Wags and Whiskers attended to a heartbreaking rescue in Lanseria.

Robyn Sayers of the organisation explained that one Sunday afternoon they were helping a woman transport her pets from her old house in Rietvallei Park in Centurion to her new house in Lanseria.

They moved a total of 20 animals to the woman’s new property. Sayers explained that when Wags and Whiskers arrived at the property in Lanseria they were approached by neighbours who showed Sayers the dogs that were living at another neighbour’s house.

“What we found was beyond shocking and heartbreaking,” Sayers said. The organisation found three fully grown bullmastiffs locked on a patio with no food and an old pot of muddy water filled with parasites and black algae.

According to Sayers, the dogs were completely emaciated, starving and over bred, with not one surviving puppy from their most recent litter.

There was another bullmastiff on the property, tied at the front of the house that was in surprisingly good condition considering the condition of the other dogs.

“We were very suspicious of the intentions of the owner and decided we were going to make it our mission to rescue all the bullmastiffs,” Sayers said. “It took us two days to organise a foster home for them and FourPaws animal shelter eventually stepped in and gave three of them a place to stay.”

Wags and Whiskers named the dogs King, Kale, Kelsie and Kylie. King was taken to foster care after being rescued and has now been homed with a new family in Bloemfontein.

The other three dogs are up for adoption and despite their sad back stories, Sayers said they have amazing temperaments and would suit almost any family. They have also been sterilised and vaccinated since their rescue.
