Accident witnesses sought

DOUGLASDALE – Anyone who may have witnessed the accident between a vehicle and a motorbike on the corner of Glenluce and Douglas roads at 6pm on 23 February are urged to come forward.

Ryan Harvey (25) was on his way to Douglasdale Police Station via Douglas Drive on his motorcycle that evening. As he was about to cross the intersection at Glenluce Drive, a woman motorist in a silver Kia Sportage was attempting to turn right from Glenluce. It’s a stop for motorists driving on Glenluce Drive, but motorists do not need to stop if travelling on Douglas Drive. The woman motorist seemed to have failed to look right before turning, according to Harvey, and he could not avoid colliding with the woman’s vehicle as she slammed on brakes and stopped in the middle of the intersection.

As a result, Harvey’s leg was crushed between his motorcycle and the vehicle, leaving his left leg mutilated.

“I remember that a security guard and a man who said he was a doctor tried to help me,” said Harvey from his bed in Fourways Life Hospital. “Blood was literally spraying out of my calf. I knew I had severed a main artery and I was beginning to faint.”

Harvey requested the security guard to remove his belt which the other man then tied around Harvey’s upper left thigh to control the bleeding.
Simone Horrell, who resides close to the intersection, heard the commotion and rushed to the scene with blankets to keep Harvey warm. “At that stage he’d easily lost six or seven pints of blood,” said Horrell. “It was the worst [leg] break I had ever seen.”

Harvey has since had eight operations on his leg, but sadly it could not be saved and was amputated below the knee.

Although details were exchanged between Harvey and the woman motorist, Harvey was in no condition to obtain the details of witnesses to the accident. Witnesses could possibly help to support Harvey’s case as both he and Horrell believe that he was not in the wrong. Horrell also remembers seeing several potential witnesses on the scene that day.

If anyone was present at the time and possibly has more information which could shed more light on the accident, they can contact Harvey at harveyshomegrown@gmail.com
