Commuters reacted with annoyance after Rea Vaya posted an urgent notice on Twitter and Facebook at 10.20am announcing an “unexpected disruption of service”.
According to reports from passengers and media, bus drivers parked their vehicles on roads around the Legislature in the inner city, blockading the roads and causing delays on President Street, Harrison Street and Albertina Sisulu Road.
Rea Vaya confirmed on Facebook that the strike was illegal and said management was working on the situation.

“Using public infrastructure to hold SA hostage!” tweeted Justice Project SA, while commuter Luyanda Mafanya (@Luyanda_Maf) tweeted “And I get here and the Rea Vaya buses are on strike. What fresh hell is this!!?”
The public transport service provider has responded apologetically to commuters’ frustration, expressing hope that the situation will be resolved by the end of the day. However, by afternoon it was unable to do more than advise passengers to use alternative forms of transport to make their way home from work.
