Land grab tensions monitored; shop owners advised to close temporarily

DIEPSLOOT - Diepsloot police are monitoring the situation after a group of about 100 people attempted to illegally occupy a land in Diepsloot East on the morning of 31 January.

Diepsloot police spokesperson Warrant Officer Daniel Mavimbela said additional resources were deployed from Tactical Response Teams and Metro police.

Mavimbela said a small section of the group later resorted to barricading Ingwenyama Road in Extension 1 and 2 with tyres and other objects.

“The police have managed to keep William Nicol Drive’s free from barricades and the traffic continues to flow normally,” said Mavimbela.

He also said that while there was tension in the area, the situation had been stabilised.

“As a precautionary measure, the police have advised shop owners to close their businesses until the situation is completely normal,” said Mavimbela.

On 18 January, Metro police evicted hundreds of squatters from a vacant piece of land opposite Diepsloot Mall.
