Police pursue money scam cases

DIEPSLOOT - Police are investigating six separate counts of fraud involving fake money.

On 8 January, police arrested a man and a woman with R14 000 of counterfeit money in their possession. They are due to appear in the Randburg Magistrates’ Court on 19 March for a bail hearing.

In a second incident, a man fell victim to a fraudster who purchased an iPhone 5 to the value of R3 500. The victim was paid in cash using fake notes.

In three other incidents currently under investigation, similar cash exchanges took place where gadgets to the value of R20 000 were acquired fraudulently. This included a cellphone, laptops, a MacBook Pro and an Apple TV.

In another case, a fuel station in Douglasdale fell victim to a counterfeit scam after a suspect paid for R500’s worth of fuel with fake money.

Warrant officer Daniel Mavimbela from Diepsloot Police Station urged members of the public to come forward if they have fallen victim to similar crimes. He also urged all members of the public to be more observant during cash transactions.

Mavimbela stressed that at this point, none of the cases have been linked. He said all the cases are currently under investigation.
