Witkoppen Road upgrade halts for holidays

PAULSHOF - Residents staying in Johannesburg over the festive season can rest assured that Witkoppen Road in Paulshof will be driveable.

Vuyisa Ngxonono of Phakama Civils and Maintenance, the contractors working on the Witkoppen upgrade, said in the article ‘Witkoppen will be driveable before holidays’ (Fourways Review, week ending 31 October) that the upgrade would be completed by March next year.

In his November monthly report, Terrance Mulalu Mukona, community liaison officer for the project, acknowledged the complaints received from local motorists, as well as the articles that appeared in the Fourways Review. Mukona said since communicating the reasons why the project had to implement speed control measure on Witkoppen Road, most residents have stopped complaining about the traffic. “What is left is to finish the project on time so that motorists can get back to their normal routine on the road,” he said.

Mukona said since the tragic incident in which a labourer was killed by a speeding truck while repairing a barrier on the road, there have been no other incidents or accidents on site. He added that Phakama Civils and Maintenance, are trying their best to complete the project by March and therefore local labourers are working very hard to finish in the next few months.

Mukona explained that the Witkoppen upgrade has not only made a lot of progress on the road but also in the local community. Thirty one labourers were hired from the Clay Oven settlement and surrounding areas during the project, and all have received certificates in health and safety, maintenance and repair of road surfaces, construction of curbs and road sign safety procedures.

Councillor Annette Deppe of Ward 93 thanked Mukona for his professionalism and invaluable communication to local government during the project.

“To the staff on this project, may they have a good Christmas and New Year,” she said.

“The motorists are looking forward to the completion of the project next year.”
