Feather’s pups need homes

FOURWAYS – PET Empowerment in Townships (Pets) volunteers have worked tirelessly in Johannesburg townships for the last several years, providing healthcare and education to improve the lives of dogs and cats in less privileged communities.

The aim is to work with the community and avoid the need for pets to be removed from their owners. The organisation is in the townships on a daily basis, responding to calls from owners and community members, providing veterinary services for sick and injured animals, and educating the community about responsible pet ownership.

The organisation recently received a call from one of their volunteers in a township, informing them of a female dog who had been hit by a car and was badly injured.

“Feather, as she is known, could not stand. She had seven babies to feed. We went through to Orange Farm township in the middle of the night to rescue her and her pups,” said Laura Whittaker of Pets.

“Feather was in extreme pain but our vet managed to stabilise her for the night, and even though feather was in such pain, she still wanted her babies with her.”

Unfortunately, X-rays showed that Feathers’ spine was severed and she was paralysed from the waist down, she would never be able to walk or even stand again. The organisation decided what was best for her and put her to sleep.

“It was an extremely difficult decision, but we promised feather we would look after her babies who she loved so much and find them the best homes out there,” said Whittaker.

Her babies are now five weeks old and will be ready to go to new homes at seven weeks. They are medium-sized mix breed.

“We would really appreciate help in finding Feathers’ babies homes, as it’s the least we could do for this beautiful, devoted mom,” she added.
