Blaze burns down building at race track

KYALAMI - A fire at Kyalami Race Track spread out of control and burnt down a storage room on the outskirts of the track on the evening of 19 October.

Kyalami and Barbeque Downs residents could see black smoke emanating from the race track from around 6.30pm. By 8pm the fire was extinguished.

The City of Johannesburg’s Emergency Services spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi said an initial fire was started at the race track and the flames spread out of control. The nearby building caught alight. He said the services were trying to find out why the fire was started in the first place, including whether it was started to discard old tyres.

Dennis Klopper of the race track was on the scene and also said it would be investigated whether the original fire was started in order to discard old tyres.

Klopper said the building  was an old store room that was located between the race track and Leeuwkop Prison. Klopper said two bakkies were kept in  the store room and said that everything was destroyed in the fire.

ER24 Paramedics said on Twitter that one person was treated for minor burns. Fire fighters were called to the scene and the blaze was extinguished. Klopper said six fire engines were on the scene. Netcare 911 Paramedics were also on standby.

Mulaudzi said investigations into the cause of the fire would continue.

Kyalami Race Track had no electricity after the fire.
