Residents left homeless and displaced

FOURWAYS - Fourways domestic worker Duduzile Sibanda is devastated after her shack in Kya Sands informal settlement burnt down.

A fire destroyed almost 900 shacks in the settlement on 9 October.

Sibanda and her sister Zodwa have lived in Kya Sands for almost 10 years. Sibanda and her three children are now left with nothing. “I have no home, no, clothes, no food, I am scared, I have nothing,” she said. Her sister has been left in the same situation.

However, Sibanda feels she has to pick up the pieces for the sake of her children. Fortunately, her brother Phillip who also lives in the settlement, has taken the sisters in.

“My sisters have lost everything,” said Phillip. “I need to look after them and their children right now.”

Jean Berdou, chairperson of the Douglasdale Community Policing Forum said the Kya Sands fire was one of the worst informal settlement blazes in Gauteng for many years.

The Sibanda family are relying on the community to help them.
