Racism allegations surface at station

DOUGLASDALE - Allegations of racism have surfaced at the Douglasdale Police Station.

According to Warrant officer Balan Muthan, head of communications for the station, the allegations were that management at the station was biased towards white officers, that black officers were not promoted, and that bail was different for black and white offenders.

Muthan said the allegations came from a group of officers at the station.

Fourways Review journalist spoke to a high-ranking police officer at the station, who wished to remain anonymous, about the allegations. The officer said the management of the Douglasdale Police Station had been dealing with issues of discipline and insubordination from junior members of staff for a while, which could be the reason the allegations arose.

The officer said there didn’t seem to be bias towards white officers at the station and that bail was most certainly standard for all races.
Being released on bail depended on a suspect’s ability to pay the bail amount.

However, Muthan was unable to confirm the officer’s statements as an investigation into the racism allegations was currently underway.

Muthan said matter was being investigated by Major-General Oswald Reddy, the Honeydew cluster commander, who visited the station on 25 August to conduct a meeting with the unhappy officers and management.
