Layla’s operation a success

LONEHILL- Little Layla O'Neill's surgery to insert a spinal shunt (Illness takes no holiday, Fourways Review, week ending 17 January) to relieve the pressure on her spinal cord was a success.

The operation took a gruelling four hours and 15 minutes to complete. According to Belinda Lombard, a friend of the O’Neill family, although the operation was a success Layla was still in a lot of pain and doctors would have to wait to evaluate whether the operation had managed to reduce Layla’s muscular and chest pain.

The operation was a delicate one and doctors at Sunninghill Hospital succeeded in not causing any damage to the movement of Layla’s legs.

Layla will now be closely monitored with doctors focusing on her pain management and making sure her oxygen levels are stable.

The O’Neill family was grateful to the community for their unwavering support, and the many messages and phone calls that they received on behalf of Layla both before the operation and after.
