Among them is actress Xoli Zondi, who plays a leading character on the show. Zondi made her mark on the small screen when she played the psychotic Zodwa on Generations and has since worked hard to establish herself as a serious actress.
On Greed and Desire, Zondi takes on the role of Nqobile – a young entrepreneur who is determined to make a success out of her bed and breakfast establishment. Nqobile is strikingly similar to Zondi’s previous roles: she is a rural woman.
“I’ve had to say no to two jobs recently because they wanted me to play a rural woman,” says Zondi. “That is a role that I have played many times before and, as an actress, I enjoy taking on different roles. What attracted me to Greed and Desire is the fact that this character is not the ordinary rural woman portrayed on TV. She is a businesswoman and her character becomes stronger as the show develops.”
Zondi will be acting alongside former Generations actors Thato Molamu and Thami Mngqolo, who were among the 16 actors fired from the show after going on strike for better pay and working conditions. Zondi was vocal about her support for her cast members who were on strike at the time, saying she would have joined them if she had been a principal cast member.
“It’s like a reunion on the set of Greed and Desire,” she says with a laugh. “The best part about working with actors that you’ve worked with before is that you don’t need to work on building chemistry. It was easy for us to gel and focus on making great television.”
On what viewers can expect from the show, Zondi says: “Expect something completely different! There is no show that is like Greed and Desire on TV right now, so it’s a fresh story. Viewers can look forward to a lot of drama, deceit, lies, politics – and great acting of course.”
