Five of the best ‘Egoli’ moments in memory of late creator Frans Marx

Director, screenwriter and author Frans Marx, who passed away due to Covid-19 complications over the weekend, made a huge mark on South Africa’s entertainment sphere.

He was responsible for the first daily soapie, Egoli: Plek van Goud and later also TV series like Agter elke man and Skooldae.

The pioneer’s soapie had South Africans on the edge of their seats on numerous occasions, whether it was because of the tension between actors or because they were almost falling off their seats laughing.

Here are five of the best Egoli moments, in memory of the talented Marx

Gé Korsten’s Egoli party

In the very first season of Egoli, Walt Vortser (Gé Korsten) threw the party of the century to welcome his son, André (Philip Moolman) back home from overseas. This party took place in the third episode and had everyone talking.

Nenna and Elsa’s weed cookies

Nenna and Elsa were probably two of the favourites in Egoli, bumping heads often, but also being the closest of friends. They were responsible for some of the most humorous moments in Egoli, like the episode in which they indulged in some weed cookies and had everyone chuckling with them.

Egoli’s Joe flaunts his buttocks

Biker, Joe (Darren Kelfkens) came into the soapie with a rebellious attitude and some swag. Apart from his appealing looks, it was Nenna and Elsa’s reactions to his rebellion that caught Egoli viewers’ attention.

Nenna’s evil twin sister

At the end of season two’s 21st episode, Nenna’s evil twin sister, Ruby made her appearance. The roles of Nenna and Ruby were both played by the late Shaleen Surtie-Richards, which showed some skill and proved what a talented actress she was.

Egoli’s kidnapping drama

Businesswoman Louwna (Brümilda van Rensburg) and her son, Albert (Emile van der Westhuizen) raised a lot of tension in Egoli’s fourth season when Emile disappeared after she left him with journalist, Lynette (Illse Roos). In the storyline, which was very relevant at the time, Lynette was working on a story about children being sold on the black market.   

The last episode of Egoli: Plek van Goud aired on 2 March 2010. The soapie was followed by Egoli – The Movie.
