If you miss an episode of a series or TV drama and need someone to help you get up to speed, South African Twitter will never disappoint you. Our local TV shows always trend, either because something beautiful happened or because there was drama.
Lateism is the latest internet sensation after last year’s episode of Speak Out when the ‘pots girl’ constructed that sentence that confused everyone. Siyabonga ‘pots girl’ Makhavhu was taken to Speak Out because she took money from a group of elderly women and promised to make pots for them. Months later and the pots were no where to be found, this is when Speak Out intervened.
When Makhavhu was asked where the pots were, she said “the pots are not here because I made the things which cannot make the pots to be done”. Obviously, a meme was born and she trended on Twitter for a while.
Now, Sunday’s episode of Our Perfect Wedding trended for all the right reasons. This time, there was a new word that was created, and as usual, has been added to South African social media vocabulary. The new word is Lateism.
The wedding day was full of drama; a relative got angry when the bride was still in the house and time was running out. We all have that one relative who is always on time, that one who gets very angry and acts as if a disaster has hit the family just because someone was running late.
The woman was complaining and said “ixesha liyahamba (time is running out), lateism is never ever in my gender or calendar.” We are still figuring out how gender and lateism are related.
This is not to even mention the bride who cried uncontrollably when exchanging her vows while the husband was laughing. The pastor did explain her behaviour, saying she loved him too much and meant everything she said.
