Nomuzi lambasted for Brenda Fassie comparison

The public has not taken kindly to ongoing comparisons between rapper Nomuzi Mabena and the late Brenda Fassie, which began last year when the rapper said she was a mix of the legendary singer and Barbadian superstar Rihanna.

In the song by DJ Vigilante, Pasop, Nomuzi called herself “a young MaBrrr”.

Twitter is now up in arms, seemingly after online magazine True Africa took time to assess the similarities and differences between The Don’t Panic rapper and MaBrrrr, and whether or not the criticism against the Nomuzi was fair.

The magazine considered her unconventional appearance, her bald head, and her hard work and perseverance despite the challenges put before her in the male-dominated rap industry.

The article argued: “2015 saw hip-hop embracing (and I use this world very loosely; these young women had to wrestle the mic from certain people) a few more women, but they were relatively unknown – underdogs. Nomuzi already had her spark, her money, her following and here she wanted MORE? It was unfathomable.

“But she’s fighting for her s#*t – and despite all of her critics, she’s getting what she wants and feels she deserves. So when she said that she’s young MaBrrr (and Twitter had another meltdown) I acknowledged that it was a bold claim, but it was one that no one had bothered to explore yet.”

The reactions on Twitter:

But some felt she should be given a chance:

Nomuzi recently made news after it was announced she would be leaving her record label Cashtime Life. She joined the label in 2014.
